Sustainable boating at sea

Beyond today, for oceans tomorrow. You want to explore our waterways. And with that same determination and passion, you want to protect them. We do too. We recognize the importance of sustainable boating. From exploring the use of renewable fuels and fuel cells, to influencing new designs of vessels towards increased sustainability at sea, we innovate for the long-term health of the waterways we enjoy.

The environmental challenge is multi-faceted, and our solutions need to be as well. We aim to take actions that make a difference for our customers, partners, employees, and society at large. That’s why we’re working on a range of different projects, spanning areas like electromobility, renewable fuels, and hybrid technology.

Creating the future of boating – responsibly.

Fuel compatibility

All our engines are Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) compatible, and we use HVO in all our vessels at our Krossholmen test facility. But we are also looking ahead to the needs of tomorrow – working towards compatibility with renewable fuels such as hydrogen and green methanol, as well as fuel cell technology. So you can rest assured you explore the ocean while minimizing your impact.

Conscious production

Innovating responsibly

Our ambition is to be a net-zero emissions company by 2050 in line with the wider Volvo Group’s Science Based Targets initiative. We will achieve this through driving our industry’s transformation, through fossil-free and renewable fuels, as well as electric and hybrid technology.

Propelling the industry forward – efficiently

Propelling you through the water in the most energy efficient way possible is what it’s all about. That’s why driveline efficiency, integration and flexibility are key for our zero emissions targets. Our years of experience delivering the most efficient drivelines, like Volvo Penta IPS and our unique Aquamatic Sterndrive package, are vital in the transition to hybrid and electric solutions at sea. As our industry stands on the brink of transformation, our learnings from the past enable us to deliver a seamless and intuitive experience on the water for today and tomorrow.

Our solutions not only meet – but exceed – a range of the latest emissions standards around the world: IMO III, EU Marine Stage V, RCD and EPA Tier III.

Our planet’s natural resources are limited. We’re working to become a more circular business that reduces waste and improves resource efficiency.

Remanufacturing

The circle of life

At Volvo Penta, we embrace the circular economy philosophy. That’s why we offer you the option to breathe new life into old engines and drivelines through our remanufacturing service. Remanufacturing minimizes waste by recycling materials and reusing parts – while keeping your cost of ownership down. Still, we keep the same standards for remanufactured components as for new production. This means you can expect the same ease, reliability, and performance as with an entirely new Volvo Penta solution, while knowing you’ve made an environmentally conscious choice.

Electrifying the marine sector – together

We always strive to create innovative and sustainable solutions to the challenges our industry faces. That’s why we’re immensely proud to announce that we’ve signed a partnership deal with electrification experts Danfoss Editron. Our two companies share a visionary mindset to take the marine sector into the future – always looking beyond today to invent tomorrow.

There’s a new ‘Polar Bear’ in the Arctic – and she’s hybrid

Our hybrid solution for Hurtigruten Svalbard’s new sightseeing vessel, the Kvitbjørn (Polar Bear), started transporting Arctic tourists from May 2022. Thanks to her silence, she has the potential to transform the tourism industry – sustainably. This is a big step in Volvo Penta’s journey to electromobility at sea, being one of the first times we’ve taken a full-systems approach when developing a hybrid-electric solution.
