A fully integrated system

The propulsion package is compact and positioned far aft. Compared to a conventional inboard shaft installation, this creates increased space on board for relaxation, productivity, crew, and cargo. And thanks to the through-hull suspension design and integrated exhaust system, the platform delivers premium onboard comfort by ensuring low noise and vibration levels – up to 50% less than a traditional installation.

Through a groundbreaking and efficiency-driven feature, the system can automatically start and stop individual engines based on the power needed for a variety of situations. This optimizes fuel consumption and engine running hours, leading to extended service and maintenance intervals – and entirely new levels of efficiency.

The forward-facing propulsion also drives efficiency gains. Twin counter-rotating propellers face forward and work in undisturbed water while the propeller thrust is parallel with the hull, so that all power drives the boat forward.

Eco Mode ensures smooth, efficient operations by dynamically adjusting power without disrupting maneuverability, designed exclusively for dual-combustion engine setups. Transitions between engines are seamless, and the system prevents excessive switching, even in rough conditions or with changing vessel weight. Captains can manually override when needed, ensuring full control in critical situations.

With optimized load balancing, reduced fuel consumption, and smart engine management, Eco Mode enhances reliability while minimizing wear and tear, keeping performance at its peak in any scenario.

The reborn ferry

As the ultimate test platform, we repowered a high-speed, 199-passenger Norwegian ferry by upgrading its 2018 propulsion system to the Volvo Penta IPS professional platform. The transformation significantly improved acceleration and maneuverability while reducing fuel consumption and total cost of ownership.

The reborn ferry

From a standstill, the test vessel reached 30 knots in 28 seconds. Before the repower to the Volvo Penta IPS professional platform, this took more than 60 seconds. Our solution cut the time in half, while providing a quieter and more enjoyable ride.

The operating speed is 30 knots when the vessel undertakes longer passages. In our test vessel, we observed reduced fuel consumption across all speed ranges – attributed to the efficiency of the system, the intelligence of our EcoMode feature, and the power of the fully integrated system working seamlessly behind the scenes. This is due to the design, development, and support of one complete system, integrated by one company.

Captain Roar Johansen has firsthand experience of the transformative power of the new Volvo Penta IPS Professional Platform. After years of piloting the classic Helgeland ferry, Johansen tested the repowered 40 feet vessel and his verdict is clear: “The maneuverability is incomparable, the acceleration incredible, and the noise reduction remarkable. It’s a completely different experience.”

Johansen highlights how the intuitive, intelligent system now seamlessly supports him on the water, ensuring smoother navigation and heightened comfort. “It’s like the system takes care of us,” he says, embracing a new era of marine technology.
