Volvo Penta has joined forces with power solutions manufacturer e-power® to deliver a cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) tailored for the rental sector, for one of Europe’s largest construction rental companies, Boels Rental. At the core of the collaboration is Volvo Penta’s BESS subsystem: a scalable, adaptable solution with an integration-ready architecture that enables faster time to market and application-specific flexibility.

As part of Volvo Penta’s strategic approach to decarbonization, the company will showcase its battery energy storage subsystem and renewable fuel-compatible combustion engines at Middle East Energy (MEE) 2025. Volvo Penta aims to engage with stakeholders and industry leaders at Booth H7 D10 in the renewable and clean energy product sector to explore net-zero solutions and collaborative business opportunities.

Tightening emissions regulations and electric needs that outweigh grid capacity in the construction and mining sectors have given way to increased energy storage demand. With an energy-dense and compact design, Volvo Penta’s BESS subsystem bring transportable and fast-charging benefits to system integrators and BESS manufacturers looking to deploy their BESS solutions in microgrid scenarios such as quarries, urban restoration sites and more.

Volvo Penta announced a follow-on investment in UtilityInnovation Group (UIG), a USA and Ireland based company specializing in resilient, innovative utility systems and decentralized energy solutions. This strategic investment marks a continued commitment to driving the energy transition. It also underlines Volvo Penta’s role in the growing global market for energy infrastructure as an independent supplier of energy-dense battery energy storage (BESS) subsystems.

As industries navigate the energy transition, merging the reliable performance of diesel combustion engines with renewable fuels like hydrogen can help maintain uptime while opening up new opportunities. Volvo Penta’s hydrogen dual fuel engine, based on the EU Stage V D8 platform, incorporates CMB.TECH’s hydrogen technology. This allows applications to run on a mix of hydrogen and traditional fuel; and in the event hydrogen is temporarily unavailable, they can operate on diesel or even HVO.
