Keeping Corrosion at Bay

The highly durable titanium-ceramic drive coating and aluminum exhaust work together as countermeasures for corrosion. Closed loop cooling and easy drain help ensure saltwater stays out of places it doesn’t belong. Eliminating exposure to saltwater not only provides greater engine durability, it also significantly improves a boat’s resale value.

Titanium-Ceramic Coating

The durable titanium-ceramic Coastal Series coating is applied using a state-of-the-art electrodeposition process and covers the entire drive assembly This acts as a countermeasure for the Volvo Penta drives against galvanic corrosion. The Coastal Series package also includes two sensors that deliver audible and visual warnings to alert boaters to the presence of water in the bellow area. This protects the quality of the drive gear’s lubricant which is an indicator of potential marine corrosion.

Turning the Tide

Volvo Penta brought the first gas sterndrives to market in 1959. Over the last 10 years, we have taken massive steps to upgrade and modernize our sterndrive offerings. The first step was the decision to replace the cast-iron blocks with GM’s V6 and V8 all-aluminum engines with closed freshwater cooling, improved torque and lower emissions as well as features like common rail direct fuel injection, catalytic converter and variable valve timing. In addition to the upgraded engine features, we also decided to add Easy Drain and engine flush to make maintenance easier. The second was the revolutionary Forward Drive (FWD), which opened a totally new category of multi-purpose sterndrive boats optimized for the popular sport of wake surfing and other towed sports like skiing and wakeboarding.
