Volvo Penta Showcases Transformation toward Sustainable Solutions for Commercial Marine Industry at WorkBoat Show 2022

Volvo Penta will be involved in multiple streams at this year's WorkBoat Show, taking place Nov. 30 – Dec. 2 in New Orleans. The annual event provides a platform for commercial vessel owners, operators, builders and suppliers to network, receive industry updates and learn about the latest products and trends.

Showcasing Volvo Penta’s solutions

Volvo Penta will highlight a diverse portfolio of offerings aimed at helping operators improve performance and total cost of ownership, while reducing emission footprints. The company leverages a variety of technologies in line with the latest regulations, as well as hybrid applications and renewable fuels, to support customers in reaching their sustainability targets.

On display at this year’s WorkBoat Show will be the Volvo Penta IPS30, D16, and IMOIII.

Paired with the company’s 13-liter engine, the Volvo Penta IPS30 delivers powerful performance, excellent maneuverability, unparalleled comfort on board, and longer range with less fuel consumption and emissions. The system can power a wide range of commercial marine vessels such as off-shore wind farming or passenger transport vessels of up to 100 tons.

The recently upgraded D16 engine is ideal for a wide range of heavy-duty operations and is available as a propulsion engine, complete marine genset, and auxiliary. The proven engine now produces more power than ever, and is characterized by several key enhancements for improved efficiency and performance such as twin Turbochargers with a wastegate, and an electronically controlled Unit Injector.

The IMO tier III, or IMOIII, is a compact aftertreatment system made for vessels 79 feet and above. These systems are the smallest on the market, allowing for more freedom of vessel design and simple retrofitting. When paired with an integrated Volvo Penta IPS engine, an IMOIII can bring emissions down to almost zero.

Behind the Innovation

Also under discussion at the show will be Kvitbjørn’s nomination as one of the top 10 Most Significant Boats of 2022. The vessel Kvitbjørn, which was first announced in November 2021, is powered by a complete helm-to-propeller Volvo Penta twin D4-320 DPI Aquamatic hybrid-electric solution. It is the result of collaboration partners Volvo Penta, Marell Boats, and Hurtigruten Svalbard who have established this three-year pilot project to test new electromobility technology in one of the world's most extreme maritime environments.

This solution allows the vessel to reach a 32-knot top speed and a 25-knot cruising speed in subzero temperatures, with a range of 500 nautical miles and delivering near-silent operation at low speeds. These qualities combine to create a high-performance sightseeing vessel that minimally disturbs local wildlife and produces far lower emissions than conventional sightseeing boats.

Volvo Penta has been invited to join the panel “WorkBoat Significant Boats: Behind the Innovation,” which will take place on December 1st from 10:00 am – 10:45 am. WorkBoat Magazine Editor Ken Hocke will moderate the panel and ask questions that allow representatives from four of the top ten Significant Boat nominations to deep dive into each vessel. This panel will be an exploration of where the future of the marine industry is headed. Jonas Karnerfors, Sales Project Manager for Volvo Penta, will represent the company on this panel discussion.
