How HVO can benefit you on land and at sea
Since 2016, all Volvo Penta diesel engines have been compatible with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). HVO is a stable, high-quality fuel, suitable for both marine and industrial power systems that can lower fossil CO2 emissions by up to 90% (depending on the feedstock).

HVO is a renewable paraffinic fuel produced from either vegetable or animal sources. When producing HVO, hydrogen is added. The hydrogen combines with the oxygen, which removes water from the fuel. The result is a stable and sustainable fuel.
HVO is specified in the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) standard EN 15940 for paraffinic fuels made from synthesis or hydrotreatment.
The interest from Volvo Penta’s customers in alternative fuels, like HVO, is increasing. And we keep working to find more sustainable solutions that are favorable for both our customer’s businesses and the environment.

Differences between diesel and HVO
HVO has a substantially higher cetane number (ignitability) but also a somewhat lower density compared to diesel. This leads to a substantial reduction of particulates (soot) but can also lead to a slight decrease in power and a slight increase in volumetric fuel consumption. HVO is also sulfur-free.
HVO should be treated as diesel fuel and it works in exactly the same way when it comes to service and installation. It can be used neat or blended and is compatible with all diesel engines from Volvo Penta.

Trial & Testing
HVO lives up to high Volvo Penta standards
The Volvo Group, including Volvo Penta, has been conducting measurements and tests on HVO for more than a decade. The testing process includes fuel consumption and performance, which has given Volvo Penta extensive experience in the qualities and possibilities of HVO.
