IMO Tier III solutions

Using Volvo’s expertise on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment technology, we’ve developed a robust solution to the IMO Tier III requirements. Designed for marine use in tough conditions all over the world, it meets every standard while maintaining engine efficiency and drivability. The system is optimized for high sulfur fuel.
IMO Tier III focuses on reducing NOx, a type of hazardous gas which damages eco systems. Using SCR technology, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is infused into the exhausts, and gases are mixed inside the SCR unit. The ammonia content of the DEF/urea – detected by an intelligent sensor – transforms the NOx into nitrogen and water, reducing NOx levels by up to 75%.
For IMO Tier III, Volvo Penta installations are as flexible as possible. As a large part of the installations are made during repowering, we have prioritized utilization of machine room space. For additional ease of installation, our SCR unit features multiple outlets with robust bolt flanges. The SCR system can also be delivered as a ‘plug and play’ package that includes UREA tank, dosage valve and UREA quality and level sensor.
With our IMO Tier III engine solutions, you benefit from a fully integrated system. The monitoring is integrated, and values are shown on your EVC or MCC displays. The whole solution is optimized for simple installation, operation, maintenance and service.
Our solutions – designed to safeguard you for IMO Tier III requirements – are certified by major classification societies all over the world, and have been specifically adapted to suit demanding marine conditions. We’ve also built in a silencer to reduce sound by at least 35 decibels, because we never stop looking for new ways to reduce impacts on the marine environment.
For our D13 engines, the solution is available for Volvo Penta IPS, Diesel Inboard, Marine Genset and Auxiliary applications. The IMO III range is also available for D8 and D16 engines, for Diesel Inboard, Marine Genset and Auxiliary applications.

Our journey starts here. Together. The IMO Tier III and Stage V solutions we’ve developed go above and beyond what’s required. At Volvo Penta we’re proud to push for sustainability breakthroughs that ensure generations to come will enjoy the beauty of healthy oceans.

EU Stage V Marine solutions

The Stage V emission limits for Inland Waterway (IWW) vessels was adopted by the European Parliament in 2016 and has been a legally binding requirement since 1 January 2019.
By leveraging our proven IMO Tier III technology, we’ve developed robust D8 and D13 solutions for Diesel Inboard, Marine Genset and Auxiliary ranges – 154-256 kW – that comply with the Stage V standards.
We’ve drawn on in-depth evaluations of customer needs along with our existing IMO III technology, and the legislation at hand. Our Stage V emission limits for Inland Waterway solutions meet every standard without ever compromising on either performance or reliability.
At Volvo Penta, we offer a range of Stage V certified products – from 210 to 400 hp and up to 300 kW marine gensets. The engines are designed to cope with high back pressure.
