Supporting growing energy needs: Battery energy storage (BESS) subsystem
With batteries designed for industrial use, Volvo Penta’s scalable
BESS subsystem can support BESS units intended for uses such as peak shavings, and rapid charging and discharging, making them a complement to gensets as industries electrify. Its energy-dense design with its favorable C-rate make it a transportable solution, much like certain gensets, enabling reliable power across diverse industries. In hybrid setups, it optimizes fuel use and charging cycles, improving uptime. By integrating with hybrid and fully electric applications, BESS supports continuous operations while reducing emissions.
A BESS featuring Volvo Penta’s subsystem
Volvo Penta’s approach focuses on supplying the BESS subsystem while leveraging the expertise of OEMs and system integrators to develop complete solutions for end customers. This collaborative approach accelerates time to market and ensures solutions that more effectively meet project and customer needs.
Reliable engines with renewable fuel compatibility
As part of its commitment to sustainable power solutions, Volvo Penta continues to develop its combustion engine platform to accommodate alternative and
renewable fuels such as natural gas, hydrogen, and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). All Volvo Penta engines today are certified to operate on
HVO.
The company is on the path to realizing hydrogen engines, starting with dual-fuel configurations running on
diesel and hydrogen on their stage V D8 engine. The power generation segment presents opportunities to further the sustainability potential of existing engine platforms. Stationary applications may have more flexibility in navigating regulatory considerations, creating room for advancements in efficiency and emissions reduction. Field tests are ongoing, with plans to introduce the D8 dual-fuel engine to the genset segment in Europe later in 2025.
Kristian Vekas, product manager Industrial at Volvo Penta, emphasizes: “Power generation is vital across different industries, and adopting renewable fuel-compatible genset engines can reduce emissions while ensuring reliability. Collaborating with customers, we aim to develop scalable, practical solutions that ease the transition to lower-carbon energy.”
