The Glass Cockpit System has now been expanded with a new 9000 series premium display. It features widescreen 4K resolution and response times 7x faster than previous versions, making it perfectly suited to superyachts and other luxury boats. The new 9000 series display is offered in 19”, 22”, 24’’ or 27” screen sizes that provide consistent, accurate colors that can be seen from all viewing angles in strong sunlight, even with polarized sunglasses.
With one, easily visible dashboard screen, the Glass Cockpit System enables “heads-up” operation, as boaters only need to train their eyes on one display, offering an improved line of sight. This makes for safer operation and enables boaters to better connect to their environment, which helps create more memorable experiences at sea.
The Glass Cockpit System conveniently visualizes essential information — such as engine data, temperature and activated functions — in addition to any other information boaters wish to customize the display with, such as charts, radar and sonar. Boaters can use the Glass Cockpit System as a digital hub to control lighting, music and other entertainment features. A button press on the Volvo Penta joystick changes layouts to suit different modes.
With the expansion to 4K resolutions and an extended range of screen sizes, the new 9000 series offers the most premium cockpit solution available today.
“Since its introduction, Volvo Penta has continued to update the Glass Cockpit System, bringing enhanced features that reflect the evolving nature of modern boating,” said Henrik Karlsson, product manager at Volvo Penta. “As engines and boats continue to increase in size and complexity, so does the demand for larger displays. The new 9000 series is not only larger in size but higher in resolution and more responsive to the touch.”
Powering the ecosystem
The Glass Cockpit System seamlessly integrates with other Volvo Penta innovations. It easily harnesses the power of Volvo Penta technologies, such as
Assisted Docking,
Joystick Driving,
Autopilot,
Interceptor System and
Garmin Surround View Camera System. Boaters can also use their smartphones to control the Glass Cockpit System, recording and sharing their journey as they travel, as well as syncing with the
Garmin Active Captain to update software and charts.
Volvo Penta’s approach to using Glass Cockpit as a platform ensures that it will continually evolve and improve over time. New updates are perpetually on the way. This means that Glass Cockpit users are implementing a system that will always hold value — it won’t quickly be supplanted by a similar system with new features. The platform will grow along with them.
“The beauty of the Glass Cockpit System is its flexibility that allows for continual evolution to adapt to new technologies. With the new 9000 series display, one of the first things we considered was how to make it an integral part of the Volvo Penta ecosystem,” Karlsson said.
One of the Glass Cockpit System’s most powerful features is its single-screen display, and with the new 9000 series adding 4K resolution and expanded size options, this feature is even more commanding. A single screen also makes it easier and faster to install than other systems — reducing connections, cabling and complexity. With Volvo Penta supplying the entire system from helm to prop, boat builders can quickly and conveniently select from a menu of compatible components, making it fully customizable.
“With a single display that is so powerful, so adaptable and so easily integrated with other technologies, the concept of a full glass bridge is now a reality,” Karlsson said. “With the expansion of the Glass Cockpit System to include the new 9000 series screens, we are making great progress in creating better ways to explore and experience life on the water.”
