Remanufactured engines and components, as good as new

The Volvo Penta Exchange Components system makes broken engines come back to life. It is a cost-efficient alternative to ordinary maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), resulting in engines that work and look just like brand new ones. Remanufacturing engines and replacing (or restoring) components is highly beneficial for all customers; especially as there is no compromise in terms of quality, durability, or performance.

A typical engine remanufacturing customer case

The process of remanufacturing an engine starts with the customer; an individual boat owner who has suffered an engine failure, or a maintenance supervisor at a factory whose genset does not run as intended, for example. The customer can then turn to his or her Volvo Penta dealer, and buy a remanufactured engine (it could also be called a reman engine or exchange engine) from them. The dealer may either have a remanufactured engine in stock, or can order one from Volvo Penta.

The customer provides the dealer with the broken engine. The engine is disassembled and thoroughly inspected at a core hub, and if it can be remanufactured, it is sent to a remanufacturing facility. There, the components are restored or replaced, depending on their condition (some components are always replaced in order to ensure the quality of the remanufactured engine). Components not made by Volvo Penta are sent to the original manufacturer to be processed there.

At the end of the remanufacturing process, the engine undergoes extensive testing. This in order to verify the engine’s performance, and to make sure that it fulfills the specifications. When the remanufactured engine leaves the remanufacturing facility, it is literally as good as new. This means that it comes with the same warranty, and has the same expected lifespan, as any new spare part. Volvo Penta’s exchange component system covers IPS drives and their components as well.

Remanufacturing engines and exchange components has numerous benefits
When your engine breaks, you can always buy a new one. Remanufacturing it, however, will likely go a lot faster and be cheaper too. Volvo Penta dealers often keep remanufactured engines in stock.

If you have the ability and know-how, you may want to buy the components and repair the engine yourself. Still, that can prove costly and time-consuming as well. Moreover, it does not come with any guarantee that the engine will once again work as perfectly as when you first bought it. The tests we conduct at the final stages of the remanufacturing process ensure that the engine can operate at full capacity.

In both of these cases, a remanufactured engine would be a cost-efficient, reliable alternative. The comparatively short lead times of the exchange component process make for yet another benefit, especially when uptime is critical. In addition to this, remanufacturing engines and components contributes to increased sustainability and resource efficiency. Even when an engine is too damaged to be remanufactured, its raw materials are still recycled at the core hub.

Expanding the number of engine remanufacturing sites worldwide
Volvo Penta has a global presence, with core hubs and/or remanufacturing facilities in France, Belgium, Sweden, Russia, Australia and the United States. We expect to open additional sites in Canada, Singapore and South Africa in the next few years. Later this year, we will start remanufacturing engines in the United States, at our production plant in Charlotte, North Carolina.

You do not have to live in any of these countries in order to use our remanufacturing and exchange component system. These services are available to all of our customers, except for those living in countries with particular import restrictions. For more information on this, and if you want to know more about our exchange component system, please contact your local Volvo Penta dealer. The Volvo Penta Exchange Component system has been around for decades, and we continually try to enhance and expand it. One part of that is making sure we can remanufacture more engine models, restore more components, and do so with even greater efficiency.
