Stage V mobile genset range expands with D8 and D13 engines

Volvo Penta launched its first Stage V-compliant engine for mobile gensets, the D16, in March 2019. By adding the D8 and D13 engines into the mix, Volvo Penta has built a range that features a variety of solutions for customers.

Leading engine and power systems manufacturer Volvo Penta has broadened its Stage V mobile genset range with the launch of the D8 and D13 engines. The D8 is a completely new addition to the Volvo Penta genset family; the design is based on proven and mature technology concepts already existing today across the Volvo Group.

Extending the range
As with the other Stage V engines, the D8 and D13 additions have been developed with ease of installation, operation and maintenance in mind. Lower maintenance requirements and significantly lower fuel consumption (compared to Stage IIIA) combine to deliver improved total cost of ownership. Volvo Penta has also improved the user environment by lowering the noise output.

Volvo Penta’s Stage V-compliant D8 genset engine is a premium dual speed engine, switchable between 1,500 rpm (50 Hz) and 1,800 rpm (60 Hz) and delivering up to 218 kWm at prime power. It is available in three power nodes: 150, 200 and 250 kVA at 1,500 rpm (50 Hz) at prime power.

Similar to the D8, the D13 engine is also a dual speed engine. Switchable between 1,500 rpm (50 Hz) and 1,800 rpm (60 Hz), it delivers up to 345 kWm at prime power and is also available in three power nodes: 300, 350 and 400 kVA at 1,500 rpm (50 Hz) at prime power.

Low complexity, high efficiency
For both the D8 and D13 genset engines, Volvo Penta selected a low complexity design to maximize robustness and reliability. This was made possible due to high efficiency of the Exhaust Aftertreatment System (EATS), in which the engine and aftertreatment system work seamlessly together.

“This is the first time customers have to install the aftertreatment system and take care of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) for the D8 and D13,” Kristian Vekas, product manager for gensets at Volvo Penta. “Due to this, we wanted our Stage V to be seen as a simple, complete system; therefore, our solution has been designed to be flexible in the installation as well as ensuring ease of maintenance.”

The D8 solution is a two-box system designed for installation flexibility. The D13 solution is a one-box system designed for compact installation. Both engines feature optimized passive regeneration strategies, meaning that active regeneration is kept to a minimum.

“The D8 and D13 engines feature increased oil change intervals, meaning lower maintenance costs,” adds Vekas. “More components are also replaceable, which is a benefit from a durability perspective. The DPF, for example, can easily be exchanged.”

Dedicated to customer success
Volvo Penta is an independent supplier, meaning everything it does is in service to the customer.

“At Volvo Penta, we don’t build gensets,” concludes Giorgio Paris. “Our business is to be a partner to our OEM customers. Instead of competing with them, we are dedicated to supplying the necessary design, installation, operation and maintenance support to our customers, wherever they are in the world.”

Volvo Penta will display its Stage V D8 and D16 genset engines, as well as the EATS system, at both Distributed Power Europe (stand B6/053) and Ecomondo ­(stand A5C5/001), in Rimini, Italy between 5th-8th November.
