Volvo Penta & Sustainability

Our sustainability journey

Volvo Penta’s dedication to developing new solutions is nothing new. We’ve always been this way. Curious. Eager. Today, we combine our long history of sustainable innovation with a keen eye on the future. Because this is how we will discover the sustainable solutions of tomorrow. Both on land and at sea.

2005

IPS

The Inboard Performance System (IPS) was a true game-changer for the entire industry. IPS made the boat faster, stronger, quieter, easier to handle, and more fuel-efficient.
2011

100% carbon neutral plant

With changes in fuel, ventilation systems, working tools, lighting systems, and environmental training – operations at the Volvo Penta engine plant in Vara, Sweden, became 100% carbon neutral.
2014

Joins the WWF Climate Savers Program

As part of the wider Volvo Group pledge, Volvo Penta joins the WWF Climate Savers program. The purpose of the program is to encourage businesses and industries to make pledges to help reduce their impact on the environment.
2016

Approval of HVO fuel

To contribute to reducing the environmental impact of our products, Volvo Penta 2016 approved the use of hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO) in all our diesel engines.
2016

Further development of the IPS

Volvo Penta broadened the IPS system to all D8 engines on the commercial market. The upgraded system was lighter, more streamlined, and featured improved hydrodynamics, which led to excellent fuel efficiency.
2018

Supporting the United Nations Environment Programme

When UNEP launched the Clean Seas campaign, Volvo Penta instantly became a supporter. Our goal was to boost engagement in the campaign and highlight the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans.
2019

Electromobility projects on land and at sea

We take action to enhance our electrified solutions for industrial and marine applications. Over the years we have, for example, developed a fully electronic terminal tractor, an electric driveline for the world's first electrical fire truck, and co-developed hybrid solutions for marine commercial applications.
2021

Supporting the switch to 100% HVO fuel

When other suppliers didn’t accept HVO fuel in their vehicle warranty, we revised our terms to support the RoRo Terminal in Gothenburg and their decision to switch to 100% HVO fuel.
2021

Set our own SBTi Targets

Volvo Penta set its own targets to align with the ambitions of the Paris Climate Agreement. To ensure complete transparency in our research and results, we’re committed to the Science Based Targets initiative.
