Junttan selects Volvo Penta as engine partner in next-generation equipment

Junttan, the Finnish foundation equipment specialist, has partnered with Volvo Penta to power its next-generation machines—starting with the new DR5 drilling rig—uniting shared values, technical strength, and a long-term vision for reliable, future-ready solutions.

A new chapter for Junttan and Volvo Penta

The DR5 drilling rig marks the launch of a new chapter for Junttan, as the company introduces its new-generation product line powered by Volvo Penta engines. The DR5 is the first model to feature the high-performance Stage V Volvo Penta D16, a powerful engine with a compact design that delivers 585 kW, aimed to meet the demands of specialist equipment with rigorous uptime and reliability requirements.

“For us, this is a strategic choice for the long term,” said Tomi Voutilainen, director of product management and engineering at Junttan. “Volvo Penta’s offering doesn’t just meet our technical needs today — it has the range, flexibility, and development paths to support where we’re going tomorrow.”

A strategic fit rooted in shared values

Junttan began its search for a new powertrain partner in 2020 to future-proof its equipment for modern job site demands. After evaluating the market, Volvo Penta was selected for its extended maintenance intervals, compact engine design, scalable power options, and robust global service network — but just as importantly, for a cultural fit that emphasized agility, transparency, and shared values.

“This collaboration shows how Volvo Penta supports OEMs with flexible, dependable solutions,” said Pasi Jävelä, area sales manager at Volvo Penta. “We aim to be a responsive, long-term partner that grows with our customers.”

Built for growth

With equipment operating in remote locations around the world, Junttan relies on robust, easy-to-maintain engines supported by a strong global network — making Volvo Penta a natural fit. All new-generation products, including pile driving rigs, drilling rigs, and hydraulic power packs, will be designed to maximize efficiency, extend service intervals, and reduce total cost of ownership.

A forward-looking partnership

Both companies share a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability and innovation. Junttan’s DR5 drill rig continues that legacy with a 20-tonne weight reduction over its predecessor and compatibility with 100% renewable HVO fuel.

“This partnership is built to evolve,” said Voutilainen. “Volvo Penta’s roadmap and modular approach give us confidence that we’ll have the power solutions we need — whatever the future brings.”
