A new era: Volvo Penta unveils the future of the marine commercial sector at SMM 2024

SMM 2024 attendees can look forward to groundbreaking innovations from Volvo Penta including the highly anticipated debut of the Volvo Penta IPS Professional Platform Here, Jan Willem Vissers, director of marine commercial at Volvo Penta, outlines what more to expect at this year’s show.

What can attendees expect from Volvo Penta at SMM 2024?

Jan Willem Vissers: We’re really excited to present some major new technologies at SMM 2024 that will transform how we think about marine commercial vessels. Visitors will see the first-ever physical display of the much-anticipated Volvo Penta IPS Professional Platform, a revolutionary new propulsion system for fast commercial marine vessels. As well as exhibiting the system on-stand we’ll also be presenting more details on the first real-world application of the system in our exciting collaboration with Northern Offshore Services (N-O-S) and its latest I-Class CTVs (Crew Transfer Vessels). Also on the agenda is our unique hybrid-electric package, which opens up exciting new possibilities for hybridization and electrification. Elsewhere, visitors can see our proven and popular D8 IMO III and D13 engines, which deliver unbeatable power and efficiency.

Could you tell us more about the Volvo Penta IPS Professional Platform and what makes it a game-changer for the marine industry?

Jan Willem Vissers: The Volvo Penta IPS Professional Platform is unlike anything else in the marine commercial sector: a truly a next-generation propulsion system that sets new standards in terms of performance and efficiency but with a future-proofed design that gives owners the flexibility to update their power sources as their business advances. It builds on our proven Volvo Penta Inboard Performance System (IPS) and Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) technologies, incorporating unique enhancements for larger commercial vessels. One of the standout features of the platform is its configuration with a dual power drive system which allows for up to eight power sources. This means vessels will be able to efficiently combine traditional internal combustion engines with electric or hybrid power sources. The flexibility this allows, plus the intelligent Eco Mode, optimizes performance and efficiency and makes it easy for operators to integrate new technologies as they become available.

What does the collaboration with Northern Offshore Services mean for the future of marine commercial operations?

Jan Willem Vissers: Our collaboration with Northern Offshore Services shows how innovation can deliver truly groundbreaking change in our industry. Together, we are pushing the boundaries of marine technology. By integrating our Volvo Penta IPS Professional Platform into NOS’ new I-Class CTVs, we’re not just providing more efficient propulsion but transforming how vessels can operate in some of the most demanding marine environments. The collaboration is an example of the real-world application of new technology, setting new standards for efficiency, maneuverability, and adaptability, but also introducing new operating capabilities. It’s a major step forward in meeting the growing demands of industries like offshore wind energy, where operational reliability and efficiency are critical.

How will the new D13 IPS hybrid-electric package change the commercial sector's perspective on marine propulsion?

Jan Willem Vissers: The D13 IPS hybrid-electric package is an exciting new first for the commercial marine segment. It combines our reliable and much-loved D13 engine with an advanced hybrid-electric system, giving operators the ability to seamlessly transition between electric, hybrid, and traditional driving modes. This opens up new levels of flexibility, for example allowing for reduced noise and vibrations in electric mode, while simultaneously offering improved comfort, and efficiency – instantly enabling vessels to work in areas such as emission-sensitive locations. In addition, it comes with a host of features that Volvo Penta customers love, such as Joystick Docking and our Dynamic Positioning System, which make handling the vessel simpler and more precise. We already have huge interest in the new system, as operators look to enhance the performance and operational capabilities of their organizations.

How is Volvo Penta’s approach to marine solutions and technology designed to meet the needs of the marine commercial segment?

Jan Willem Vissers: At Volvo Penta, we take a solutions-based approach, designing systems that are tailor-made for each customer. With a strong focus on flexibility, adaptability and modularity our heavy-duty solutions are built to withstand the toughest demands. This allows us to meet the diverse and evolving needs of the marine industry, delivering commercial vessels that are perfectly suited to their application. At the same time, we maintain the fundamentals of our approach to design, creating high-performance systems that are durable and reliable—essential factors in handling challenging conditions at sea, and trademarks of any Volvo Penta installation. With this design philosophy as our beacon, we’re also committed to our ethos of ‘In Pursuit of Beyond’ which represents our ambition to deliver state-of-the-art marine technologies. You can see that through the integration of advanced technology in our Volvo Penta IPS Professional Platform or the introduction of hybrid-electric solutions, and it emphasizes our ongoing mission to provide systems that are ready for today’s demands and adaptable for tomorrow’s challenges.

What message does Volvo Penta want to send to the industry at SMM 2024?

Jan Willem Vissers: We want to reinforce that Volvo Penta is committed to leading the marine commercial industry from its position at the forefront of marine innovation. Our range of marine propulsion systems and technologies are designed to provide unmatched efficiency, ease of operation, and adaptability. By focusing on modular and flexible solutions, we empower our customers to navigate the complexities of modern marine commercial operations with confidence. Whether it’s through pioneering new technologies or collaborating with industry leaders, we are dedicated to delivering the highest standards of performance and reliability, and ensuring our customers are well-equipped for whatever the future holds.
