Time is money: Remanufactured engines keep businesses going

For Terlouw Rotterdam’s customers, every minute of downtime means lost income. With Volvo Penta’s remanufactured engines and parts, service times can be significantly shortened without compromising quality or reliability.

Every year, over 460 million tonnes of cargo passes through the Port of Rotterdam, making it Europe’s biggest port and one of the biggest logistics hubs in the world. All day, everyday cargo and goods are continuously loaded and unloaded from an endless flow of ships and vessels, which connect Europe to the rest of the world.

Terlouw Rotterdam, specialists in diesel engine maintenance and repairs, has been located at the port for nearly a century, and like every other business there, it needs to be operational 24/7, 365 days of the year. Its customer base includes OEMs for powerpacks and generator sets, agricultural equipment, stone crushers, shipping companies, as well as fleet owners and ship management companies.

“For all our customers, time is money,” says Pascal van Eijzeren, Technical & Key Account Manager at Terlouw Rotterdam. “If a diesel engine stops, every hour it is down can cost them 10,000s of Euros so we need to ensure we can delivery parts and services around the clock.”

Remanufactured parts reduce service times by weeks
Terlouw Rotterdam has been a Volvo Penta dealership for industrial engines since the 1980s and in recent years has become one of its biggest distributors of remanufactured engines and parts. It stocks high-demand parts such as remanufactured cylinder heads, turbos, injectors and cooling water pumps, as well as remanufactured engines and long blocks.

“Remanufacturing is the easiest and fastest way for us to serve a customer, so that they can put their machines back into operation as quickly as possible,” says Pascal. “It can save 5-6 weeks for our customers, which makes a huge difference.”

As the recent issues surrounding global supply chain bottlenecks and material shortages have only increased the delivery times of new parts and engines, this has further increased the appeal of remanufacturing. There is always some hesitation from some customers, due to the misconception that they might be getting a pre-owned or remanufactured part. But being able to offer the same warranty terms as new, goes a long way in allaying those concerns. Terlouw Rotterdam offers a Volvo Penta warranty of one year or with a maximum of 3000 operating hours on Reman parts and engines* if installed by the customer, and a Volvo Penta warranty of two years or 3000 operating hours on Reman parts and engines installed by Terlouw Rotterdam.

“It’s very important that the customer feels they’re getting the same lifespan as a new engine,” says Pascal. “When you factor in that a Reman engine is usually cheaper and that the delivery is many times faster than new, it suddenly becomes a very appealing option.”
