Troubleshooting

An alarm or abnormal engine symptom indicates that there might be an issue that needs attention. Here are some guides on how you can determine the severity of alarms and symptoms, find probable causes, and get help.

Determine level of severity

Red alarm means warning or danger, and we always recommend that you stop driving as soon as possible.

NOTICE! If you are in a potentially dangerous situation, always continue to a place where you can stop safely. For some red alarms, the engine automatically limits some functionality.

Possible causes and corrective action

For the most common engine alarms and symptoms, the operator’s manual describes some possible causes and recommended actions. In some cases, you can solve the problem yourself. However, in most cases there are several possible causes, so we always recommend getting in touch with an authorized Volvo Penta dealer.

Help to troubleshoot and solve the problem

Volvo Penta dealers have trained technicians with access to special tools and diagnostics, giving them the ability to perform professional troubleshooting. Finding the root cause can often be difficult and requires experience, which is why we always recommend contacting your dealer to find the root cause of any issues.

Maintenance

Through regularly scheduled engine maintenance and the use of genuine Volvo Penta parts, you get the best conditions for a long-lasting, reliable, and high-performing engine. Below, you’ll get an overview of the main areas of maintenance to help you service your engine.

Determine your service need

The service recommendations for your engine are found in the maintenance schedule. You can download it from the Manuals & Handbooks page. The service intervals are based on engine hours or period of time.

Service planning

The maintenance schedule describes the different service packages. It also states if you are allowed to perform the task yourself within the warranty period. We always recommend an authorized Volvo Penta dealer performs the service.

Service alternatives

To ensure maintenance is done correctly, we always recommend that you have the service done by an authorized Volvo Penta dealer.

Repairs

Repairing Volvo Penta engines and systems requires a certain level of technical skills. That’s why we always recommend letting a professional, authorized Volvo Penta dealer do any repairs. Our dealers have the correct knowledge to undertake repairs and perform a function test afterwards to make sure everything works as it should. An engine under warranty must always be repaired by an authorized Volvo Penta dealer for the warranty to remain valid.

Repair by a professional

If you are in a new area or don’t have a dealer, Volvo Penta Action Service can help you contact a dealership and ensure you get help.

Repair it yourself

Even if you should have sufficient technical skills and want to perform repairs yourself, there are several things to consider before you begin. Always ensure it’s an older engine with an expired warranty, as the warranty won’t be valid after your own repair.
