If you have an engine alarm, its color tells you its general severity. Yellow indicates caution, and red indicates danger.

Yellow alarm means caution. Something might be wrong, and we recommend you contact a dealer to troubleshoot the issue. Yellow alarms are not an immediate danger to the engine, and you can continue to drive until the next harbour or to your dealer. However, we always recommend being observant of engine symptoms and driving carefully until the problem is solved.

For the most common engine alarms and symptoms, the operator’s manual describes some possible causes and recommended actions. In some cases, you can solve the problem yourself. However, in most cases there are several possible causes, so we always recommend getting in touch with an authorized Volvo Penta dealer.

For some alarms, the operator’s manual provides basic descriptions. The extent of the description varies depending on the engine’s manufacturing year. Descriptions, possible causes, possible corrective actions, and symptoms are examples of what you can find in the manual. You can also find a fault tracing schema for engine symptoms, providing you with mapping symptoms for potential causes.

An alarm or symptom can always have several different possible causes. The combination of alarms or symptoms, together with how it occurred, when it happened, what you did before, possibly observed symptoms, etc. can all be clues to finding the root cause.

Volvo Penta dealers have trained technicians with access to special tools and diagnostics, giving them the ability to perform professional troubleshooting. Finding the root cause can often be difficult and requires experience, which is why we always recommend contacting your dealer to find the root cause of any issues.

It is always important to share the sequence of events prior to the alarm. How they occurred, what you did before they happened, any observed symptoms, etc. are all clues and will help the dealer to troubleshoot the problem.

Moreover, if you have Easy Connect or TGW engine connectivity, make sure to share your engine data with your Volvo Penta dealer. This will let your vessel communicate trouble codes directly to the dealer and give them the ability to easier find the root cause.

Engine hours can be read out in the engine operator’s interface. 

Your engine’s service history can be obtained from authorized Volvo Penta dealers. Contact your dealer or go to Volvo Penta Connect. Please note that you have to be registered as owner of your product. Registration and ownership control are done manually by our support team, expect between 2-6 weeks.

The maintenance schedule describes the different service packages. It also states if you are allowed to perform the task yourself within the warranty period. We always recommend an authorized Volvo Penta dealer performs the service.

A trained Volvo Penta technician have extensive experience, training and access to all our workshop manuals and support, providing them the ability to perform even the more complex repairs. An authorized Volvo Penta dealer also always uses genuine Volvo Penta parts, which provides you with an extended part warranty of two years. 

Most repairs also require specific function tests to ensure everything works as expected. Beyond mechanical and function experience, these tests often require special tooling and diagnostic equipment only accessible by our authorized dealers.

To find the parts you need, go to the Volvo Penta Shop and search for your engine serial number. You’ll then find part schemas for your engine and can order directly from our dealer network. Every installation is different. For some parts, each engine has several variants. Ensure that the part corresponds to the current one in your installation, or reach out to a dealer for help. All our genuine Volvo Penta parts and accessories are covered by Volvo Penta’s one-year standard warranty. If you order and have the parts fitted by an authorized Volvo Penta dealer, the warranty is extended to two years.

Therefore, you need to have technical skills to use them. Procedures listed in our manuals and handbooks also often require special tooling and methods only possible to be found in a professional workshop.
